In this tutorial, we’ll search for male patients over 70 who haven’t been prescribed any statins. To do this we’ll craft a recipe with three parts.

Getting Started

To begin, click the + New Recipe button to open the Recipe Builder: image.png
By default, PracticeMate includes only active patients in your search. You can modify this setting, but for this tutorial, we’ll keep the default “Status is Active” criterion.

Adding Your First Criterion

Let’s add an age criteria of over 70.

Step 1: Add a New Criterion

Click + Add Criterion to expand your search parameters.

Step 2: Select the Age (Years) Field

Click inside the **Field selector **to view all available search fields: Screenshot2025 10 24at1 32 41pm Pn
Take a moment to explore the available fields. You’ll find options for demographics, medical conditions, medications, and much more.
Select Age (Years) from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Configure Your Search Range

  1. In the Operator field, select ≥ is greater than or equal to
  2. In the Value field, enter 70

Step 4: Add a criterion

Add another criterion to limit our search to male patients
  1. Click + Add Criterion again
  2. Select the Field Sex
  3. Select the operator is
  4. Select the value Male

Note that the connector between criteria defaults to AND but can be changed to OR. This allows you to craft extremely targeted recipies! In this case we wish to find patients who are both over 70 AND male.

Testing Your Recipe

Once you’ve configured both criteria, it’s a good idea to test your recipe:
  1. Click the Test Recipe button at the top of the screen
  2. Watch as PracticeMate processes your query and displays the result
The test results show you exactly how many patients match your criteria without saving the recipe permanently. Take note of how many patients the recipe finds, this number will decrease as we add more complexity to narrow down the results

Step 4: Add an ingredient

To search for prescriptions we will add an ingredient
  1. Click + Add Ingredient
  2. In “Select method” click Have
  3. In “Select table” click Prescriptions
  4. We’ll now add a criteria in this section. Click + Add Criteria
  5. Select Product Name, Contains and type “statin”

We know that the popular statins in Australia contain “statin” in their name. If this wasn’t the case we could simply add a criteria for each product name that may be relevant, and use OR to join them.
  1. Test your recipe then save it for re-use.

Saving Your Recipe

If you’re happy with your results, save your recipe for future use:
  1. Enter a descriptive name in the Recipe name field
  2. Click Save Recipe
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created a complex recipe!
